The Planets

Canon 30D

I used to live near Loch Leven in Perthshire and you would regularly find me visiting Burleigh Sands with my camera, tripod and waders to take dramatic landscapes.

Here there was an unusual alignment of the Crescent Moon with what I recall was Venus. Someone pointed out to me that it looks like an Anteater on the end of the foreground branch.

Gilberto

Leica SL

Part of my submission to LEICA as part of the world needs witnesses campaign. Gilberto is deaf and plays for Rolls Royce Chess Club. Being deaf and highly skilled at British Sign Language (BSL) he is highly expressive.

Shot using one of my favourite vintage lenses the Leica 50mm f/2 Summicron from 1971. At the time this was one of the finest optics in the world but 50 years on it can still hold it’s own against modern computer aided design lenses.

Liam Hulmes

Olympus E-M1 MkIII

Was in Loughborough at the end of August to develop film from my 1971 German Tank of a camera, the LEICAFLEX SL. Whilst waiting for the colour prints I went for a photo walk and met and spoke to a talented singer songwriter Liam Hulmes.

Go give him some love at LIAMHULMESMUSIC at all your media channel of choice either Facebook, Instagram, Tiktok, Spotify, Apple Music or Youtube. He doesn’t just sing he writes his own songs which are fabulous and I hope he gets his big break soon.

Fallow Deer

Olympus E-M1 MkIII

I love nature and have spent a lot of time this Summer in ancient woodland trying to track and capture a photograph of a Chinese Water Deer. Unfortunately they have proven very elusive with only two brief sightings.

Here is one of my favourite local wild animals, the European Fallow Deer, Fully grown females (does) are 0.73 to 0.91m at the shoulder and weigh between 35 to 56kg. If you see a white deer it may well be a fallow as they have four main variations of coat which includes white:

  • Common – tan/fawn, with white spotting on flanks and white rump patch outlined with black horseshoe shaped border. Coat fades to a general grey colour during the winter
  • Menil – paler colouration with white spots year-round and a caramel horseshoe shape on rump (This photograph)
  • Melanistic – black, almost entirely black or chocolate coloured
  • White – white to pale sandy-coloured turning increasingly white with age (this is a true colour and not albino).

Hope

Olympus E-PL7 : Leica 15mm f/1.7

An illuminated planet Earth sculpture has gone on display at Derby Cathedral, having won praise elsewhere in the country. Gaia is by UK artist Luke Jerram. The work will opened to the public on 22 September and will remain in place until 16 October.

Gaia is a touring artwork measuring seven metres in diameter and created from 120dpi detailed NASA imagery of the Earth’s surface. The artwork provides the unique opportunity to see our planet on this scale, floating in three-dimensions above the nave of the Cathedral.

This spectacular installation stimulates thought over key issues of climate change, creation, and our place on the Earth. The events programme that runs alongside Gaia invites visitors to enjoy wellbeing events, music, and nature walks.
