An illuminated planet Earth sculpture has gone on display at Derby Cathedral, having won praise elsewhere in the country. Gaia is by UK artist Luke Jerram. The work will opened to the public on 22 September and will remain in place until 16 October.
Gaia is a touring artwork measuring seven metres in diameter and created from 120dpi detailed NASA imagery of the Earth’s surface. The artwork provides the unique opportunity to see our planet on this scale, floating in three-dimensions above the nave of the Cathedral.
This spectacular installation stimulates thought over key issues of climate change, creation, and our place on the Earth. The events programme that runs alongside Gaia invites visitors to enjoy wellbeing events, music, and nature walks.
